Is Your Computer Ready for Year 2,000 ?

If you or an essential supplier relies on a computer for work purposes, now is the time to check your system.

Systems may malfunction from 1 Jan 2,000 or earlier ,due to :

Hardware - BIOS only recognizing 2 digits
Operating System failure
Applications or other software failure
or a combination of the above.

You should have a strategy from 1 July 1998 so that a full financial year of testing occurs; some say 1 Jan 1999 may be critical , as that date was used as a default date in some programs !

A Y2K PRO-FORMA CHECKLIST : YOUR STARTING POINT !!

Inventory all hardware, software and data
Contact suppliers to check whether your items are compliant. Eg. a 1 year old IBM PC may be safer than a clone, Microsoft web site refers to Windows 95 is "compliant" but File Manager may not display dates beyond 2000, so you may need to download a new WINFILE.exe. You may need to replace a chip or motherboard or change software. MYOB say they're compliant.
Develop a timeline for deadlines for "fixes"
Test all PCs : will they recognize dates beyond 1999 and analyze software as to how they handle 1/1/2000, this may involve buying diagnostic software. The cheapest test may involve backing up data and changing the system date on booting., but seek assistance if you are not sure what you are doing!
Consider upgrading archive & current files to Y2K compliant versions. Old Data on zip drives may be corrupted when accessed after 31/12/1999 !
Contact your business partners and suppliers with whom you have exchanged electronic data to check their Y2K Plans and advise them of yours. Monitor their progress and ensure that you protect each other to avoid damage or law suits!
Test your essential systems eg invoicing and purchases for a full year prior to 2,000.
Part or all of the cost of ensuring your system is Year 2000 compliant may be tax deductible. See brief notes on Australian Taxation aspects of Y2K.
